fix(desktop): classify out-of-space update failures by free disk, not message text - #6448
Conversation
… message text The macOS update staging tools report a full volume in text we do not own: ditto prints an errno-free line and Squirrel forwards NSError strings localised to the user's system language. The existing guard needed a Node errno prefix plus an updater path marker, so none of them matched and every occurrence was captured. Each message embeds the staging path, so each one also grouped as a brand-new Sentry issue. Ask the filesystem instead: statfs the volume holding the updater caches and treat a volume that cannot hold a staged update as the user's environment. That is language-independent and needs no path parsing, which matters because the Cocoa variant carries no path at all. The log line and the error status sent to the renderer are unchanged, so the app still tells the user the update failed.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe updater now uses shared environment-error classification. It checks available staging-volume space and suppresses environment-owned failures from Sentry. Tests cover localized disk-space errors, volume states, timeouts, filesystem errors, and updater defects. ChangesUpdater Error Handling
Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Mergeability Score: 🟡 Moderate · up to The update-error classification now depends on free space, but the checked volume may differ from the volume actually holding updater staging data. This could misclassify failures and change which errors are sent to Sentry, so the volume relationship should be verified or explicitly accepted before merging. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

Electron app.getPath("cache") macOS path documentation and whether it shares ~/Library/Caches with electron-updater baseCachePath
💡 Result:
On macOS, the Electron app.getPath("cache") method returns the standard per-user application cache directory, which defaults to ~/Library/Caches [1]. Regarding electron-updater, it does not share the same base directory as app.getPath("cache") [2][3]. While app.getPath("cache") points to ~/Library/Caches, the electron-updater baseCachePath (on macOS) defaults to ~/Library/Application Support/Caches [2][3]. In summary: * Electron's app.getPath("cache"): Resolves to ~/Library/Caches [1]. * electron-updater base cache: Resolves to ~/Library/Application Support/Caches [2][3]. Because these paths are distinct locations in the macOS file system, they are not shared [2][3]. The updater creates a specific sub-directory within its own base path (typically named {appName}-updater) to store downloaded update files [2][4][5].

🌐 Web query:
site:electronjs.org/docs/latest/api/app app.getPath cache macOS default path
💡 Result:
The Electron API does not include a 'cache' name for the app.getPath(name) method [1]. In Electron, application caches, such as cookies, local storage, disk caches, and network state, are stored in the directory defined by the sessionData path [1]. By default, the sessionData path points to the userData directory [1]. The userData directory is the standard location for an app's configuration files, and it is typically located within the user's application support directory on macOS [1]. Because Chromium may write very large files to the sessionData directory, it is recommended to override this path if your application does not rely on browser storage, in order to avoid polluting the userData folder [1]. You can override the path using app.setPath before the ready event of the app module is emitted [1].

electron-updater 6.8.3 getAppCacheDir baseCachePath macOS source
💡 Result:
In electron-updater version 6.8.3, the function getAppCacheDir is defined in the AppAdapter module [1][2]. It serves as a base directory provider and, specifically on macOS (darwin), it returns the path to the user's Caches directory: ~/Library/Caches [2]. It is important to note that getAppCacheDir returns the parent directory, not the final application-specific cache folder [3]. The complete cache path used by the updater is constructed by joining this base path with an application-specific updaterCacheDirName (typically the sanitized application name followed by -updater) [4][5][6]. On macOS, the full path is: ~/Library/Caches/{sanitized-app-name}-updater [4][5] Historical context indicates that in older versions, this was incorrectly located in ~/Library/Application Support/Caches, but it was moved to the standard ~/Library/Caches to align with proper macOS conventions [7]. The baseCachePath property in the AppAdapter interface reflects this base cache directory [1][8][2].

Measure the updater cache volume instead of userData. electron-updater@6.8.3 uses an OS cache root and appends its updater directory. Electron’s app.getPath() has no "cache" key. Resolve the same updater cache path before calling statfsSync; otherwise Sentry classification can use the wrong volume.

The disk heuristic ran before any message inspection, so below the staging threshold it returned true for everything — a corrupt download, a bad code signature, an unreadable feed. A full disk causes none of those, and the test suite asserted the over-match rather than catching it. Check the failures we can positively attribute to ourselves first and let them report regardless of disk, then apply the heuristic to the remainder.

The first pass listed only checksum-mismatch, signature and feed-parse failures, so "Cannot find channel", "No files provided" and the no-checksum variant were still suppressed on a low-disk machine. Each is a bad release artifact that a full volume cannot cause. Broadened the checksum entry to catch the no-checksum wording too, and pinned all six against both a full and a roomy volume. Flagged by an automated reviewer on this PR and verified against electron-updater's own error strings.

Problem
macOS auto-update failures caused by a full user disk are captured as Sentry exceptions. They arrive several times a day and can never be archived: the failure message embeds the full per-user staging path, so every occurrence fingerprints as a brand-new issue.
Two further consequences:
Root cause
isEnvironmentUpdateErroralready existed to keep user-environment update failures out of Sentry, but it only recognised two shapes: a Node errno prefix (ENOSPC:,EACCES:, …) combined with an updater path marker, or one of two hardcoded English phrases.Out-of-space failures match neither:
NSError, whose text is localised to the user's system language. Evidence so far includes English and Spanish; there is no reason to think that set is closed. The localised variant carries no path at all, only an archive filename. So the guard never fired and the handler captured every one.
Fix
Classify on a structural signal instead of the message text: on an updater error,
statfsthe volume holding the updater staging caches and treat the failure as environmental when that volume cannot hold a staged update.nulland the error reports as before.Threshold is 1 GiB. A macOS update downloads a ~600MB archive into the user's cache directory and unpacks it alongside itself, so a volume under 1 GiB free cannot stage one regardless of what our updater does.
I looked for a stronger signal first and there is none.
MacUpdaterforwards Electron's nativeautoUpdatererror verbatim (this.nativeUpdater.on("error", it => this.emit("error", it))); that error is built from anNSErrorlocalised description with nocode, noerrno, no exit status, and no electron-updater error class. Free space on the staging volume is the most structural signal reachable at this site. No message-regex matching was added. The pure predicate moved to a sibling module so it can be tested without booting the main-process entry point; its existing text branches are unchanged.
What still reports as a Sentry exception
Everything that is not the named condition, whenever the staging volume has ≥1 GiB free:
latest-mac.yml)Unchanged from before this PR: read-only-volume failures,
the request timed out, and errno-plus-updater-path failures remain classified as environmental. The tradeoff, stated plainly: while the volume is under 1 GiB free, every updater error is treated as environmental, including a genuine bug that happens to coincide with a full disk. That is deliberate — no update can be staged on such a volume, so no failure on it is actionable for us — but it is broader than "out of space" alone and is pinned by a test so it cannot change silently.
What is unchanged
This is a classification change only.
log.errorand theAUTO_UPDATE_STATUS.ERRORstatus emitted to the renderer are untouched, so the app still tells the user the update failed with the same message. NobeforeSendfilter, no Sentry-side suppression — the decision stays at the capture site. Nothing about update staging, disk cleanup, or the user's disk-full condition is touched.Verification
bunx biome checkon the changed files:cd apps/desktop && bun run typecheck:bun test apps/desktop/src/main/lib:The new test pins both captured message shapes (account name and archive digest replaced with placeholders in the fixtures), that both report when the volume has room, that checksum/signature/feed failures still report, and the full-volume tradeoff above.
